Sport highlights, 17-19 July
Sports fans can look forward to a weekend full of action in a wide range of sports.
The Springbok test match against Australia in Brisbane, starting the Rugby Championship this year, may be the highlight of the weekend, but there is still a lot of other sports action to brighten up sports lovers’ weekend.
Rugby
The u.18 Craven Week action, taking place in Stellenbosch, will reach a climax this weekend when the unofficial final will be played.
There are also the Currie Cup warm-up games with Blue Bulls supporters especially interested to see how their team does in the match against the EP Kings. This game is on Friday afternoon.
However, at 12:05 on Saturday (SA time) everyone’s attention will be on the test between the Springboks and the Walabies in Brisbane. This year’s Rugby Championship will be shortened due to the forthcoming World Cup and therefore none of the teams can afford to lose this one.
Cricket
With the T20 and ODI series between the Proteas and Bangladesh now a thing of the past, cricket lovers can start looking forward to the test series between the two countries, which will start on Tuesday.
After England’s solid win against Australia in the first test of the Ashes series there will be great interest in the second test of the series. The test started on Thursday, 16 June and will be played on Lords, the so-called home of cricket.
Tennis
Although the exciting action at Wimbledon is done and dusted, local tennis fans are in the fortunate position of being able to support international tennis on their doorstep this weekend. The Davis Cup Europe/Africa Zone group 2 playoff tie, to be played at the Irene Country Club in Pretoria, is crucially important for both sides as the winner will prevent relegation to group 3 in 2016.
The action begins on Friday, 17 July with the first games. The second round matches will be played on Saturday and the final game will take place on Sunday.
Athletics
For the athletes who are brave enough to get up early on a weekend to participate in a road race, there is the Garsfontein Ice Breaker (previously known as Mooikloof Realtors 10km and 5km winter road race). Under its new name, a 21,1km half marathon is also added to the race. The race starts and finishes at Laerskool Garsfontein and starting time is at 07:00.
