South African bronze-medalist Anaso Jobodwana has received a pat on the back from World champion Usain Bolt after the two, running side-by-side, were placed third and first respectively in the final in Beijing on Thursday.
Jobodwana, in a time of 19:94, came in behind in-form US sprinter Justin Gatlin, who took second spot in the 200m final at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships.
While Jobodwana was being interviewed, Bolt came over to him and gave him a hug before congratulating him.
In the 200m semi-final, Jobodwana ran side by side with and finished behind Bolt to qualify for the final in second place. He ran the third best time in the semi-final heats.
“I did not have a good start, so I was under pressure from the beginning. I was holding on to the very end, I did not want to let go. I think running next to Bolt is a lucky charm,” he said in an interview.
Jobodwana ran in the lane to the left on Bolt’s in the semis and then to his right in the finals.
Jobodwana said he got a boast from fellow-South African, Wayde van Niekerk, who had won the 400m final the previous day.
“Wayde was a huge inspiration, he made me realise we can also get medals,” he said.
