SuperSport United secured a quarter-final berth in the Telkom Knockout with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Polokwane City on Wednesday evening, at the Peter Mokaba stadium.
Goals by Thuso Phala and Dove Wome were enough to see the defending champions through despite playing with 10 men for 30 minutes.
Phala opened the scoring after a set up from Jeremy Brookie.
Brookie flicked a ball through which City keeper George Chigova failed to handle and Phala made no mistake in the fifth minute.
‘Rise and Shine’ wasted no time and six minutes later, they deservedly got their equaliser when Punch Masenamela found Puleng Tlolane who netted a goal for Polokwane City.
City then started to boss the game but the second proved elusive.
SuperSport scored their second of the night after good approach work from Phala who beat several defenders to find Wome.
Matsatsantsa were reduced to 10 men when Bradley Grobler was shown a red card but Gordon Igesund’s men defended with their lives to book a place in the last eight.
A win comes at the right time for Igesund’s men who have been struggling for positive results in the Absa Premiership.
