Springboks coach Heyneke Meyer quit on Thursday morning, saying it was in the interest of the sport for him to stand aside.
Meyer guided the Springboks to the semi-final of the 2015 World Cup in England after a narrow 20-18 defeat to New Zealand.
“Thank you to the countless faithful, positive and passionate supporters that have made my job as coach a joy,” Meyer said in a statement.
“I have always put the Springboks first in my time as coach and since returning from England I have realised that as much as I believe I still have a lot to offer, the time has come for change.”
Meyer coached the Boks between 2012 and 2015.
Saru’s general council is scheduled to meet on 11 December to discuss the Bok head coach position. Many have tipped Allister Coetzee to replace Meyer.
