Titans crowned Ram Slam champions
With a clinical performance against the Dolphins, the Titans made sure on Saturday, in Centurion that they were crowned the country’s best T20 team for the first time in five years.
Albie Morkel and his Titans became the new Ram Slam T20 champions in Centurion on Saturday, when they beat the Dolphins by seven wickets in the final .
The men from Centurion had not won this title since the 2011/12 season.
The Titans were favourites from the start after they ended league phase of the competition with 13 more points more than their opponents in the standings. When Morkel also won the toss and sent the Durbanites in to bat, there was a spirit of excitement among the Titans supporters after their team distinguished themselves as good chasers on their home ground.
The Dolphins opened the innings on a good note with a partnership of 49 runs between Jonathan Vandiar (26) and Morné van Wyk (29). There was also excitement among the spectators when Kevin Pietersen walked out after the Van Wyk wicket fell. Pietersen, however, could not continue his good form and was dismissed for only 10 runs.
Later, the Dolphins’ duo of Dwayne Bravo (53) and David Miller (33) played a decent hand to help the Natal boys to a decent 159/5 in their 20 overs.
All the Titans’ bowlers did well under the circumstances, and though David Wiese was punished in his third over, he took two wickets.
Quinton de Kock (12) and Henry Davids (35) did not waste any time and chased hard from the very first ball. When De Kock lost his wicket in the fourth over, Mangaliso Mosehle joined Davids at the crease, and the home team never looked back.
Mosehle (87 from 39 balls) was the hero of the Titans’ innings. His knock included 6 fours and 7 sixes.
In the end, the Titans needed 16 overs and 5 balls to reach the winning target. Fittingly Morkel got the winning runs with a neat four through extra cover.
