Sport Highlights, 14 – 16 January 2016
After rain fell nationwide, South Africans who want to see the best golf and cricket in Johannesburg over the weekend can look forward to cooler temperatures.
There are endless possibilities for the Gauteng sports lovers this weekend whether they want to participate or be spectators.
Cricket
Although the Titans lost their recent match against the Knights in the four-day Sunfoil series, they are still in first place in the log in the tournament. Farhaan Behardien and his men started their fourth game of the series on Thursday 14 January, against the Dolphins at Willowmoore Park in Benoni. Play starts at 10:00 daily.
The third cricket test between the English touring team and the Proteas will also start on Thursday at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. Unfortunately there is no test match scheduled for Centurion during this tour, so the Wanderers test will be the only chance for the people of Pretoria to see the English team in action in test cricket. Play will also start at 10:00 daily.
Running/Athletics
For everyone who enjoyed too many barbecues and beer this festive season, it’s time to get the running shoes out of the closet.
The Athletic Club of Eersterust (ACE) offers a chance to athletes this Saturday (January 16), to leave the holiday laziness behind and start the new year on the running note. The ACE Bestmed half marathon and 10km race will be run on a moderate and scenic route starting from outside the Eersterust Soccer Stadium. The route can best be described as undulating and it gives the runner a glimpse of the townships character. The shorter 10km race is a single lap through the area. Both races will start at 06:00.

Soccer
For soccer lovers, there is plenty of action in the premier league this weekend. All three local teams will be in action. Moreover, there will be a local derby between Mamelodi Sundowns and AmaTuks at the Lucas Moripe stadium in Atteridgeville. This game takes place on Sunday at 18:00.
Earlier on Sunday (15:30), SuperSport United will play Polokwane City at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
Tennis
The first Grand Slam tennis tournament of the year, the 104th edition of the Australian Open, starts on Monday 18 January, at Melbourne Park in Melbourne.
South Africa’s Kevin Anderson, who is currently ranked 12th in the world, will start this tournament as the 11th ranked player. Another South African, Raven Klaassen and his American partner, Rajeev Ram, are ranked 13th in the doubles.
Golf
The Johannesburg Open golf tournament, one of the local tournaments that is part of the European series, started on Thursday 14 January, at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club. The champion will be crowned on Sunday, and 2014 champion, Pretoria’s own George Coetzee, will be in action after a long layoff because of a serious ankle injury.
