Sport Highlights, 22-24 January
While schools athletics should keep sports fans busy over the weekend, there will be at least other action for those who want to head to SuperSport Park for the cricket or for the couch potatoes who want to follow the action on TV.
Although the fourth cricket test between South Africa and England at Centurion will be only of academic interest, it is still an opportunity for local cricket lovers to watch top Test players in action.
Cricket
After the Proteas last week caused shame in Johannesburg and gave England the chance to win the current Test series between the two teams, the fourth and last Test in the series has been reduced to a game with only academic value.
There is however no doubt that the Proteas will use this test to try to regain some lost pride. It also remains an opportunity for Pretoria’s cricket lovers to see top Test cricketers in action. Action in this five-day test starts at 10:00 on Friday, January 22 at SuperSport Park in Centurion.
Last weekend’s four wicket-victory by the Titans against the Dolphins in the Sunfoil four-day-series strengthen Farhaan Behardien and the team’s position at the top of the log.
They are, however, chased by the Lions, only five points behind them on the log. This week’s game against their neighbours, played at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom therefore gives the Titans a chance to increase the gap between themselves and the Lions. The game is scheduled for Thursday, January 21 to Sunday, January 24 and play will start at 10:00 daily.
Athletics
Road athletes should by now be again fit enough for a solid half-marathon and the 41th George Claassen Memorial Road Race, presented by Price Waterhouse Coopers and the Pretoria Marathon Club, is just what the doctor ordered.
This year, the race will start and end at the Pick-n-Pay in Faerie Glen in Atterbury Road. Athletes have a choice between three distances.
The main race is a 21.1 half marathon. There are also the choice of a 10km road race or a 5km fun run for those who are not fit enough for the big one. Enquiries: EC Orsmond on 083-388-4842.
Soccer
The Premier League continues this weekend and local soccer fans can again look forward to a Pretoria derby. The log leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns, is playing against the struggling SuperSport United, currently tenth on the log, on Saturday night. The game starts at 20:15 and will be played at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville.
On Sunday afternoon at 15:30, AmaTuks, currently at 15th in the red zone of the log, will take on Black Aces, who is playing very good football this season and is currently second on the log.
Tennis
There were no major shocks in the first few days of the Australian tennis tournament in Melbourne. This weekend, however, things will start to get difficult for the favourites, as the tournament progresses.
South Africans’ hope was shattered when Kevin Anderson (11th seed) had to retire due to a knee injury and therefore lost against Rajeev Ram in the first round.
Ironically, South Africans will now have to support Ram as he will try to win the men’s doubles title with the South African, Raven Klaassen.
