Sport highlights, 10-12 June
International action in various sporting codes is on the menu this weekend.
June is the month of international action on the rugby and cricket fields, while football fans will have to spend their time in front of the television to watch the action in the European championship finals.
Rugby
The Springboks will be in action this weekend, for the first time since last year’s World Cup tournament.
The three-test series against Ireland starts this weekend, with the first test at 17:00 on Saturday evening, at Newlands in Cape Town.
Meanwhile, the u.20 world championships is also still running in England. After their good victory in the first game against Japan, the Junior Boks play against Argentina on Saturday night at 19:00.
For those who are interested in club rugby, there is also action in the Carlton league this weekend.
The Dragons play at home against Impala and will try to further improve their position in the log.
The two old rivals Tukkies and Pretoria Police play at the students’ home ground, while Naka Bulls and Centurion will meet each other on the former’s home turf in the Moot.
Cricket
The Proteas started the West Indies tri-series with a defeat followed by one victory. They will try to beat the Aussies again this weekend, when the two teams meet in St Kitts at 19:00 (SA time) on Saturday night.
The South Africans meet the West Indies again next Wednesday, at the same time in the same city.
Athletics
Gauteng North athletics presents the Nina Park 10km Race Against Drugs this weekend, for all those who do not mind getting up early in the middle of winter.
The race starts and finishes at the Nina Park SPAR, on the corner of Brits Road and Grafenheim Street in Akasia, north of Pretoria.
The event also includes a 5km fun run. Both races starts at 07:30. Enquiries: Daan du Toit on 082 572 4169.
Boxing
Golden Gloves presents the first leg of its super four cruiserweight tournament this Saturday, with two South Africans involved.
South African champion Kevin Lerena will fight Roberto Bolonti of Argentina, while Johnny Muller faces Micki Nielsen of Denmark.
In an earlier bout at 19:00, Simphiwe Khonco will fight Siyabongo Siyo for the IBO minimum weight world title.
