Two local athletes in national relay team for Olympic qualifier
Two Tuks athletes, Akani Simbine and Emile Erasmus, are part of the national 4x100m relay team that will try to qualify for the Olympics this weekend.
Athletics South Africa announced the Men’s Senior Relay Team that will contest for an Olympic Games qualifier at the Flanders Cup in Kortrijk, Belgium on Saturday.
Due to non-availability of most athletes, ASA will now send only the 4×100 team. Three teams had initially been invited, namely 4x100m Men, 4x400m Women and 4x100m Women.
“We tried our best to put together all three teams,” said Aleck Skhosana, the President of Athletics South Africa. “However, due to unavailability of athletes either because of injuries or other reasons, this was the best and only team that we could put together and are sending.
“We had put together other teams but we suffered late withdrawals due to the reasons already mentioned which made it difficult to make replacements because of the set time for visa applications for the new athletes.
“This left us with no other choice but to go with the Men’s Team as it was the only one that we could confirm within the given time” Skhosana said.
The 4x100m Men team are Akani Simbine, Antonio Alkana, Emile Erasmus and Roscoe Engel.
The team has already left for Europe.
