Blue Bulls score eight tries, beat Griquas convincingly at Loftus
The Blue Bulls were clinical and ruthless on Friday when they gave the Griquas a proper hiding in their Currie Cup game at Loftus Versfeld.
The Blue Bulls are still steaming ahead to the Currie Cup semi-finals after they destroyed Griquas 57-20 at Loftus Versfeld on Friday.
The Bulls started the match with fervour, attacking from the beginning and immediately looking dangerous.
Griquas quickly reminded the home team why they had been counted among the top teams in the tournament. They started an attacking move in their own 22m area after turnover possession that ended with a try for Alshaun Bock in the corner after Elgar Watts kicked it through.
Three minutes later, Clinton Swart was successful with a penalty and suddenly the men from the Northern Cape were 10-0 ahead on the scoreboard.
In the next half hour the Blue Bulls showed that the good start by Griquas was just a slip on their side.
After the Blue machine was properly warmed up, it was a one-sided show for the rest of the game.
The home side started to attack with all kinds of possession and they scored three tries in the space of 10 minutes. It was Nic de Jager who drove over after the Blue Bulls controlled the ball through a few phases.
The Blue Bulls’ second try was probably the try of the match. In a brilliant worked movement Jamba Ulengo received the ball on the inside from Schoeman and shot through to score under the posts.
Young star lock RG Snyman scored the third try after another driving movement from the forwards. This try and the conversion took the half-time score to 24-13.
In the second half, the Blue Bulls proved themselves as a unit with a serious chance at a place in the Currie Cup final. With a clinical display of intensity on the field they gave Griquas a rugby lesson.
From the kick-off after half-time Griquas had to try to shut all the gaps, but the intensity of the home team was just too much. Three unrequited tries in the first 20 minutes after the break took the wind out of the visitors’ sails.
Halfway through the second half Griquas had a flare-up and scored a good try, but shortly thereafter the Blue Bulls took control again. Another two tries, including a penalty try after they demolished the Griquas’ scrum, brought the final score to 57-20.
