Tshwane 10’s a huge success
The Harlequins Sports Club was the weekend a hive of activity when the first Tshwane 10s tournament was attended by thousands of participants and supporters.
The first Tshwane 10s tournament was a huge success held at the Harlequins Sports Club in Groenkloof last weekend.
Thousands of visitors from across the country gathered on Friday and Saturday for this unique sporting event.
The Tshwane 10s is the sister tournament of the popular Cape Town 10s.
The Cape Town 10s is South Africa’s biggest social sport and lifestyle event, and recently won the 2016 Discovery Sport Industry Award for Best Live Experience in South Africa.
The Cape Town 10s is the brainchild of rugby legends Bob Skinstad, Robbie Fleck and long-standing mate Ron Rutland. Starting off as a rugby only tournament in 2008, the event has since evolved into a multi-sport event, with the addition of netball in 2013 and beach volleyball as well as dodgeball in 2016.
This event is not just about the sporting action, it is also one big party featuring some of the country’s biggest and most popular music acts as well as hosting Africa’s largest beer tent.
Thousands of fans and squads gather from across South Africa to play their favourite sports and experience the vibe of 10s that is underpinned by fun, friendships, sports and a couple of cold ones.
The rugby component of 10s is billed as the biggest ten-a-side rugby tournament in the world, designed for fun but still underpinned by national and international rugby federation rules. Over the years the event has featured some of the world’s greatest international rugby legends including Jonah Lomu, Carlos Spencer and Christian Cullen, as well as other global sporting stars such as Graeme Smith and Justin Kemp.
The first hosting of the event in Pretoria boasted the presence of legends such as Bakkies Botha, Victor Matfield, Derick Hougaard, James Dalton, Fourie du Preez and other celebrities.
The Tshwane 10s rugby tournament consisted of three leagues: the Premier League, with two divisions of seven teams each; the Social League, also with two divisions, but with only four teams in each division; and the third league, the so-called “Golden Oldies” league, for the old boys over 35. The third league was called the League of Hearts and consisted of two divisions with four teams each.
The Social League was won by a team called The Piranhas.
Local teams did very well in the tournament, especially in the section for Golden Oldies. In this league, Naka Bulle, Harlequins Madalas and Grizzlies went through to the semi-finals. In the final the Harlequin Madalas played against the International Legends. The Legends won the tournament.
In the top league the Middelburg Old Boys played against the Roosters in the final with the men from Mpumalanga (Middelburg Old Boys) eventually winning the trophy.
