The king crowned the cream of the running crop in the second annual King Price Irene Farm Race on Saturday and spread some royal fun along the streets of Southdowns in Centurion with over 4200 runners lacing up for the race.

The third and final leg of the 2016 Irene Triple Challenge (ITC), hosted by King Price Insurance in collaboration with Irene Athletics Club started and finished at the Agricultural Research Council in Irene.

Athletes who entered for the ITC and who completed the other two legs (Spar Lantern 10km and Clover Irene Spring Race 21.1km) received their medals, shield and special t-shirt afterwards.

Saturday’s event included the super-serious 21,1km half marathon, leisurely 10km, 5km full-on fun run and the kids’ 1km.

Jeffrey Gwebe led the 10km men’s race with a finish time of 31,29 minutes, and the 10km women’s race winner, Carlyn Fischer, completed the race in a time of 40,41 minutes.

In the half marathon the winner was Derocious Makhobalo (70,16 minutes) and the first woman to finish was Vuyokazi Gebe (89,21minuts)

The Irene Farm Race again proved to be more than just a race. It was a fun day for the entire family including fully supervised kiddies entertainment and food stalls.

The ‘Dress like a King’ and ‘Selfie’ competitions were very popular and these attractions helped to make the race more colorful than the usual half-marathon. The best-dressed athlete and selfie-queen (or king) also received a R5000 cash prize each.
