Special wheelchair brings together two special organizations
One lucky disabled angler will soon receive a special new wheelchair from Ramcat Fish, after it was donated by the Oppi Bol Foundation.
Two organisations that both focus on helping disabled athletes joined forces last week – thanks to Rekord.
Ramcat Fish’s fishing festival for disabled anglers, which is hosted annually in Irene, received an unexpected windfall after Rekord reported about it in September this year.
When Oppi Bol Foundation chairperson Cazle Hendricks recently read in Rekord about their project to present an annual fishing festival for disabled anglers, he immediately decided to get involved.
The Oppi Bol Foundation helps persons with disabilities in society through sport and skills development. This organisation presents sports events such as golf days and road races to raise money.
They have already helped many disabled sportsmen in obtaining prostheses or appropriate wheelchairs.
The Oppi Bol Foundation therefore decided to donate a wheelchair to Ramcat Fish. This wheelchair is specially designed and manufactured for disabled athletes who must get along over rough terrain.
The wheelchair is light and folds up easily, although it is sturdy enough to handle rough terrain.
The wheelchair was officially handed over to Gerard Smal of Ramcat Fish last week at the Irene Country Lodge, where Ramcat Fish’s festival is presented every year in September.
One of the anglers who have been participating in Ramcat’s fishing festival, Johan Crouse, was also present at the handover to represent the disabled anglers.
Smal thanked Hendricks and Oppi Bol. He said Ramcat also presents other functions during which disabled people have the opportunity to socialise. He told Rekord that Ramcat will soon decide how, where and to whom the wheelchair will be donated.
According to him, it will be done after a need assessment has been made.
