Caroline Wöstmann withdraws from the 2018 Comrades Marathon
Caroline Wöstmann, who until recently was one of the favourites to win the women’s division of the Comrades Marathon this year, withdrew from next weekend's race.
The KPMG Running Club officially announced that Caroline Wöstmann won’t be participating in this year’s Comrades Marathon.
Wöstmann, who won the race in 2015 and ended in second place in 2016, was one of the favourites to break this ribbon again this year. Last year she also missed the race because of a hamstring injury.
According to the statement it was a collective decision to withdraw after discussions with her coach and the club. They made the decision due to her current fitness levels and consideration of her future running career and aspirations.
“We all understand that her withdrawal is a loss for the 2018 Comrades Marathon and Caroline’s large number of loyal supporters. This was a very tough and emotional decision, but we all believe it was the right one for the athlete at this point in time,” said the club in the statement.
The KPMG Running Club also stated that Wöstmann did everything in her power to properly prepare for the race she so dearly loves. The club also emphasized that it will continue to support Wöstmann on her journey back to full fitness.
Wöstmann is the club’s second big name to withdraw from the 2018 Comrades marathon after Jenna Challenor had to pull out due to a stress fracture.
They are however very excited about the race day prospects of their Ladies team, in particular previous gold medal winners Yolande Maclean and Danette Smith.
The race will take place on Sunday, 10 June.
