EFC kicks off new season with tournament in Pretoria

Pretoria's charismatic MMA champion Dricus du Plessis' older brother, Niel, will be in action on Saturday in the light heavyweight division at the first EFC tournament of the year at the Sun Arena in Menlyn.

The 2020 season of the local Extreme Fighting Championship kicks off this Saturday with the EFC 84 tournament at the Sun Arena in Menlyn, Pretoria.

This tournament will, as always, be a starting point for some and the culmination of years of hard work for others.

Specifically for Themba Gorimbo, the champion in the main event of the tournament, it is about cementing his legacy as the first and only ever Zimbabwean MMA world champion as he puts his title at steak against the undefeated threat of Lyle Karam.

Gorimbo has never taken his foot off the gas pedal as he continued career campaigning since he wrapped the coveted EFC belt around his waist.

Karam from Melbourne, Australia, is a man possessed to travel around the world to claim gold. He is the definition of endurance, persistence, and commitment. He is young phenomenon that tore through EFC like a storm.

The tournament will, as usual, also provide enough action for spectators who want to support a local participant. The older of the famous Du Plessis brothers, Niel, steps out of his brother’s shadow, as he moves up to the light heavyweight division in search of his own accolades in the sport and promotion.

While his brother, Dricus, currently holds the middleweight belt, Niel, wants to hold his own belt in the near future, especially in front of his home crowd of Pretoria.

His experienced opponent, Stefan Pretorius, is a big threat on the mat and his submission skills is a pertinent threat to any who face him.

In another fight that promises to yield a lot of action, two mega prospects from the Southern African region will make their main card debuts. Undefeated Tshilumba Mikixi steps up to challenge the incredibly explosive August Kayambala.

Roevan de Beer from Potchefstroom has been on a hot tear in the EFC in recent months. After a touchy start to his career, he now rides high on a three-fight win streak. None of them have gone the distance.

He will aim for a fourth straight win when he takes on Port Elizabeth’s second-degree Judo Blackbelt, Sindile Manengela on Saturday.

These are only a few of the battles in the 12-bout fight card that spectators can look forward to on Saturday night in the Sun Arena.
