Wits beat Tuks in tough duel in Varsity Cup

Tuks suffered their second defeat in this year's Varsity Cup tournament on Monday night and they will now have to work very hard if they still want to secure a home semi-final.

Wits dished out a master class performance on defence on Monday night on their home turf to secure 16-10 victory over Tuks in the Varsity Cup Tournament.

Wits’ victory is undoubtedly going to heat up the battle to qualify for the semi-finals. Apart from Maties, who seems sure of playing a home semi-final, nothing is a done deal.

For Tuks, Wits and Ikeys the next three weeks are going to be a game of musical chairs with no one knowing who will be seated when the final whistle in the round-robin games blows.

As things stand, Maties tops the log with 23 points after five games. Tuks is second with 22 points (six games), Wits third with 20 points (five games) and Ikeys fourth with 20 points (six games).

Tuks’s next game – in two weeks against Ikeys – is going to boil down to go big or go home. If Tuks loses in Cape Town, there is a real chance they might have to face-off in an away game against Maties in the semi-final. If they manage to beat Ikeys, they will in all probability play Wits at home or in Johannesburg in the semis.

Head coach, Nico Luus, has no excuses for his team’s defeat on Monday night. According to him Tuks got “out tackled”.

“Through their outstanding defensive play Wits assured that we were continuously under pressure. It led to us making mistakes at crucial times. The first try Wits scored was an excellent example as to how they were able to capitalise on our mistakes. Unfortunately for us, we missed out scoring from penalties also,” Luus explained.

According to Luus, the two things his team will need to work on before playing Ikeys are the scrums as well as the team’s play when on the attack.

“We are getting to be to one dimensional when we have the ball in hand. It is time for new ideas. It might be a good idea to make one or two tactical changes,” he commented.
