Maswanganyi smashes junior sprint record
This past weekend's Athletics Gauteng North Championship again showed that South African athletics are thriving.
Junior athlete Phatutshedzo Maswanganyi displayed spectacular form on Saturday, rocketing to a South African men’s u.20 record in the 100m sprint at the Athletics Gauteng North (AGN) Championships, held at TuksAthletics Stadium in Pretoria.
Maswanganyi won his semi-final in 10.06 seconds, ripping a chunk off the two-year-old national record of 10.11 which was held by Thando Dlodlo.
The 19-year-old speedster, who improved his Personal Best by 0.29, went on to take the provincial junior title in 10.24 in the final.
In other events, Akani Simbine clocked 9.91 in the senior men’s 100m heats, narrowly missing his own SA record of 9.89 which was set in Hungary in July 2016. Simbine went on to win his semi-final in 10.03 before taking the final in 10.01.
Shortly before confirming in a statement she would focus on the 200m event for the foreseeable future, Caster Semenya won the AGN title in the women’s half-lap sprint on Friday.
