Substitution process for 2020 Comrades has already opened

In spite of the uncertainty over the presentation of this year's Comrades marathon, the Comrades Marathon Association will continue with their official substitution process for the race, which should be held on 14 June.

Despite the current uncertainty about the immediate – and even longer term – future of major sporting events, there is still hope for athletes who want to become part of this year’s Comrades marathon through the official substitution process.

While a final decision on the 2020 presentation of the world-famous ultra-marathon will only be taken later (probably only after 15 April), the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA), will in the meantime continue with the official substitution process.

This process has already officially opened on Monday 16 March.

The substitution rule allows for aspirant Comrades Marathon runners, who were unable to enter the 2020 Comrades Marathon during the official entry period late last year, to still have a chance to be part of The Ultimate Human Race on Sunday, 14 June 2020.

The substitution process will be open for one month and will therefore close on April 16.

CMA Race Director, Rowyn James, has advised that going forward, all substitution transactions will be handled exclusively through the CMA Office.

“An administration fee of 15% of the entry fee will be deducted by CMA from withdrawing athletes and CMA will then refund the balance of the entry fee to them. There will be no direct money or voucher exchange between athletes,” James explained.

According to CMA Chairperson, Cheryl Winn, they will make announcements and issue updates on an ongoing basis regarding the presentation of this year’s race.

“As the CMA Board, we have to consider the best interest and well-being of our athletes, supporters, spectators, volunteers and the public. With 282 successful substitution applications having been processed since opening of the 2020 Substitution period on 16 March, we urge all Comrades runners to continue with their training preparations for the 95th edition of the Ultimate Human Race,” said Winn.

Athletes intending to submit substitution application forms are advised to visit the official Comrades Marathon website at www.comrades.com for the comprehensive list of rules and regulations which govern the substitution process.
