Straight-shooting local marksmen in action this weekend

Local Air Rifle Field Target shooters are taking part in a regional competition this weekend ahead of next month's national championship, when they will compete for a place in the national team that will travel to Italy.

A number of top Protea Air Rifle Field Target shooters from Pretoria are taking part in a league competition hosted by the Mildots Air Rifle Club near Heidelberg in Gauteng on Saturday 26 February. This follows hot on the heels of the North West Field Target Open at Hartebeespoort Dam that saw two Protea marksmen from Pretoria vying for first and second place in a shoot-out earlier this month. Wian Strydom from Pretoria emerged as overall winner, winning the shoot-out against fellow Pretoria ace, Baldur Engelbrecht, after the two men’s scores were even on 90/100 at the end of the open. Derek Van Niekerk from Alberton placed third with a score of 89/100.

Other Protea shooters from Gauteng taking part this weekend are Cor Swanepoel (Pretoria), Mark Fairon (Johannesburg), Sean Orsmond (Johannesburg) and Jan Steydler (Pretoria). The 2022 South African Nationals hosted by Saftaa (SA Field Target Airgun Association) is taking place on 19, 20 and 21 March at the Bushcamp at Kommandonek Resort near Hartbeespoort Dam. The shooters who make it into the Protea team will then be off to Italy in August to show their mettle in the 2022 Internationals. Next year South Africa will host the Internationals for the second time, following a very successful event on home ground in 2009. Read more about this riveting sport at  www.saftaa.co.za . Who knows, you may be keen to take a shot at it.
