Restrictions do not quench inter-high athletics spirit at Pretoria schools

After nearly 23 months of frustration for pupils who could not support their schools' sports teams, several schools in Pretoria have had spirit-building actions over the past week to encourage their athletes ahead of the various school’s league athletics events.

After schools across the country were deprived of the privilege of social fun around sporting events since March 2020 due to Covid regulations, there was light again at the end of the frustration tunnel this year. Although only athletes and a small number of adult spectators were allowed at Pretoria’s three top inter-high school’s athletics events this year, this did not stop the rest of the pupils from catching the spirit during the week to encourage their athletes before the big day.

The pride and passion amongst Pretoria schools shone through the past week as schools across the city prepared for the inter-high athletics this week.

Local schools competd in different leagues depending on the strength of schools’ sports teams.  The top three leagues for high school athletics in Pretoria, called the A, B and C leagues, are usually presented annually at the Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria West, while the smaller leagues are presented at one of the schools concerned.

This year’s action in the top three leagues kicked off on Wednesday with the C-league schools battling it out on the track at Pilditch. Hoërskool Wonderboom was the overall winner of the C- league.

The B-league schools participated on Thursday at Pilditch with Midstream College walking away as victors.
