Bulls sign versatile backline player Henry Immelman

The Bulls' newest recruit is a versatile backline player who left for Europe straight out of school to gain experience for seven years at two of Europe's best clubs.

The Bulls announced last week the signing of the promising young Henry Immelman from Scottish side Edinburgh, on a three-year deal that will run from 01 July 2023 through June 2026.

Immelman – a Grey College alumni – with playing colours for CUT Ixias, Free State XV as well as Free State U20’s, has spent the last seven years applying his trade in Europe. He played for French side, Montpellier, before and thereafter went to Edinburgh in Scotland for two years.

During his time in the Northern hemisphere, Immelman has earned over 100 professional caps, a wealth of experience that the 27-year-old back brings to Pretoria.

“Henry’s homecoming adds to our depth as the Vodacom Bulls, as it rubberstamps the depth and quality of our players. He has a wealth of experience having played against sides that we are now going head-to-head with in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship and Heineken Champions Cup, and that is an added bonus that the rest of the team can tap into,” said Blue Bulls Company Chief Executive, Edgar Rathbone.

Rathbone welcomed Immelman to Loftus Versveld and said they are confident that he will add value to the Bulls product and brand of rugby that they pride themselves on as a club.

As he reflected on his time with his current side, Edinburgh, Immelman was full of praise for the warm hospitality and care experienced with the people of Scotland.

“I’ve enjoyed every minute of my time at Edinburgh. It’s a brilliant club with an exceptional group of boys. Since day one they welcomed me with open arms, and I’ve really started to enjoy my rugby a lot more. Away trips with the Edinburgh boys are probably the one thing that I’ll miss the most. I want to thank the Edinburgh fans for all the support too. I’ve been proud to represent them and this great city during the last two seasons,” said Immelman.

When asked about his move to Pretoria, Immelman said for him personally, joining the Bulls is a great opportunity.

“They are another world class club and I’ll be closer to my family as well,” he concluded.
