Harlequins want to show what they can do in Gold Cup
The Pretoria Harlequins rugby club recently unveiled their kits for the upcoming Gold Cup tournament, which will also feature details of their new sponsor.
After a bitterly disappointing Carlton Cup campaign for their first team in 2023, the Harlequins rugby club’s management and players are certainly not in sackcloth and ashes.
After Harlequins ended up second in the Carlton Cup tournament standings, but failed to reach the Carlton Cup final in 2022, there was hope that they would do better this year.
Unfortunately, things went awry this year and Harlequins’ first team finished in seventh place at the bottom side of the Carlton Cup table.
However, things at the club are not all doom and gloom. Quins’ third team, the Jesters, lived up to their club’s name this past weekend when they beat Northam Rhinos in the league final to be crowned third team Carlton champions.
In addition, Harlequins’ women’s team beat their counterparts from the Pretoria rugby club (19-12) in the final of the Blue Bulls’ women’s club league.

There is also new enthusiasm at Harlequins for the national Gold Cup club tournament, which kicks off this coming weekend. Due to the club’s second place in the 2022 Carlton Cup standings, they qualify to take part in the Gold Cup.
During the launch of their Gold Cup jerseys, which will also feature the detail of their new sponsor, Hollywoodbets, there was no beating around the bush about the expectations in this prestigious tournament.
Dr. Theo de Jager, vice-president of Harlequins, explained that rugby is much more than just a game. He said rugby is indeed a platform where young players learn life lessons that can build them up as future leaders in society. That is why he believes that, even at club level, sponsors not only invest in the game for the exposure they get from it, but that their investment also helps to groom leaders for the future.
Willem Strauss, president of the Blue Bulls, said during the event that he believes that the standard of the Gold Cup tournament will be particularly high and that it will create more opportunities for players to be noticed at club level and perhaps get the chance to play at a higher level in coming seasons.
