Ghost Train, Andre Swiegers’ newly launched album, is set to become another landmark English album from a South African artist. This is not his first, and hopefully not his last, album, and he has raised the benchmark in English, seeing as most fans know, and love, his Afrikaans songs. Yet he has already notched up several international songs as co-writer with the Coleskes, like Aphrodite and Take me where the sun is shining.

Ghost train is an easily listening album, and like other Swiegers albums, it grows on you the more you listen to it. The melodies are sometimes haunting, but there are some upbeat country songs, blues beats and folk songs. Musically pleasing, the lyrics attest to a songwriter with an understanding of deeper issues, yet, there is no preaching or painful pointing at problems. “Help the

people” and “peace and love can change the world” impart a powerfully positive message.

The album does have one Afrikaans song, Armageddon, which is a powerful song with an unforgettable message.
