Ceremony held for fallen heroes

Law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, honoured at a Wreath laying ceremony.

To pay tribute to fallen Traffic and Municipal Officers, a wreath laying ceremony was held on Friday to give the families, friends and colleagues an opportunity to pay tribute to these fallen heroes and heroines.

The officers paid the highest toll by losing their lives in the line of duty. The annual 17th ceremony is hosted by the Institute for Traffic and Municipal Police Officers of South Africa for all officers of the Gauteng province.

“It is a sad moment in deed to remind not only ourselves but the loved ones, relatives and colleagues of our beloved law enforcement officers who paid the ultimate price in protecting others in pursuit of a safer country,” MEC of Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko said in her speech.

Mazibuko emphasised that the killing of law enforcement officers must not intimidate or derail the officers in the noble and just course of ensuring safety on the road.

MMC of Public safety, Terence Mashego indicated that it is important to honour the fallen officer and this year is a great improvement in things.

“In Tshwane we are a family. It is important that we honour our officers diligently the way they deserve.”

Family members were very touched by the ceremony and shared their feelings with Rekord.“We are very happy and feel very good that the province has taken the time to remember and honour our loved ones. It is heartbreaking to lose a loved one but one must go on,” Marie Meureng from Daspoort said.

The president of the Institute for Traffic and Municipal Police Officers of South Africa, Charles Reynolds said in the closure of his speech that if there are people who think Metro Police are pigs then they are right because the officers have Patience, Integrity and Guts (PIG).
