NU METRO: What’s new at the movies?

A new action thriller, a Best Picture-Oscar nominee, and a controversial new local drama are the three new movies opening at Nu Metro cinemas in Pretoria this week. And, next week it’s time for 2018’s first Girls’ Night Out (no guys allowed).

Den of Thieves (16 LV)

Showing at Nu Metro Menlyn Park and the VIP complex at Parkview

Members of an elite unit of the LA County Sheriff’s Department have intersecting and often personally connected lives. They are on the trail of the state’s most successful bank robbery crew as the outlaws plan a seemingly impossible heist on the Federal Reserve Bank of downtown Los Angeles. The film stars Gerard Butler, 50 Cent and Pablo Schreiber.

Den of Thieves will be showing in the Xtreme cinema at Nu Metro Menlyn for its opening week – featuring high-octane action in one of Pretoria’s most technologically advanced cinemas. Nu Metro’s Xtreme cinemas feature premium large format-screens, crystal-clear digital projection and 360-degree sound (including overhead speaker systems).

Darkest Hour (7-9 PG)

Showing at Nu Metro Menlyn Park and the VIP complex at Woodlands

Within days of becoming prime minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman) must face one of his most turbulent and defining choices – exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation.

As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe, the threat of invasion is imminent, and, with an unprepared public, a sceptical king and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation and attempt to change the course of world history.

Critics are raving about the complete transformation Gary Oldman has undergone for his role in this film – acclaim which was answered by the film receiving six Academy Award nominations, including for best picture and best actor.

Inxeba– The Wound (16 LS)

Showing at Nu Metro Menlyn Park only

Xolani, a lonely factory worker, joins the men of his community in the mountains of the Eastern Cape to initiate a group of teenage boys into manhood.

When a defiant initiate from the city discovers his best-kept secret, Xolani’s entire existence begins to unravel.

Inxeba has received critical acclaim the world over, with its controversial subject matter also stimulating fiery cultural debates in South Africa.
