Lovers of classical, jazz, rock and pop music are in for a treat.
Appearing for the first time in South Africa from Munich, Germany is the Grafinger Youth Orchestra or as it is better known, the Grafinger Jugendorchester (GJO).
As part of the Orchestra in Motion Africa initiative, 60 classical musicians aged from 13 to 26 from Grafinger Jugendorchester will collaborate with the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra on 2 September from 15:00 at the Wits Great Hall. Concertgoers can enjoy classic pieces such as Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin, Air on G String by Johann Sebastian Bach and You Raise Me Up by Rolf Lovland.
Turning it up a notch, the talented German musicians will perform their interpretation of Dream On by Aerosmith and an orchestrated swing version of No Good in Heavy Rock by Kaleo, as well as some funky film music from the movie, Beverly Hills Cop.
Music lovers in Pretoria will have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of pieces from rock, swing, modern Bavarian, and ballads when the orchestra performs at the German International School on 4 September at 19:00.
Says Hedwig Gruber, director and conductor of the Grafinger Youth Orchestra: “We are delighted to be visiting South Africa for the first time. This is an excellent opportunity for our young musicians to experience the colourful, diverse culture of South Africa and to share the German culture with our counterparts. We also look to forward to sharing the musical talents of the GJO with a variety of audiences in South Africa and to have an exchange of ideas and experiences with the young African musicians.”
In addition to the two concerts, the Grafinger Youth Orchestra will also be performing at the following venues:
– 1 September – A visit to the Eyethu Music School, where the Youth Orchestra will spend time with their Sowetan counterparts.
– 1 September at 14:00 – Nelson Mandela Square Sandton, Johannesburg – Drumline, Bands and Combo.
– 5 and 6 September – Hammanskraal community where the orchestra will have an opportunity to meet and interact with local musicians and dance groups.
The tour was made possible by the state of Germany, Bavaria, the German Business Community and German and South African Rotary Clubs.
Tickets are available from Computicket at R125 for the Johannesburg concert. Pretoria concertgoers can book their tickets at Nuticket for R100 at https://Rotarykyalami.nutickets.co.za
