Hundreds of hampers handed out
Volunteers handed out about 600 food hampers to residents of nearby informal settlements.

About 600 food hampers were handed out to residents of informal settlements in the Bon Accord area, north of Pretoria, on Saturday morning.
The initiative, which is part of ongoing projects in the area to assist the hungry, was made possible by contributions from various organisations, according to organiser and social activist Yusuf Abramjee.
“These organisations included Meal SA, the Tshwane Muslim Community, Operation SA and SANZAF.”
Hampers consisted of maize meal and food. They were handed out to residents at four locations in the area.
“We visited various informal settlements as well as the Jakaranda care centre on Saturday morning.
“While those who received hampers had been helped before they continue to struggle because the areas they stay in are so remote.”
Abramjee said the communities were desperate for food and relief.
“We were able to make some difference today. This is ubuntu in action.”
Smiley Essa from the Tshwane Muslim Community, who helped with handing out the hampers, thanked all the donors and volunteers for their help.
Several feeding projects were launched across Pretoria in the past months.
This week, a local non-profit organization, Hennops Revival, provided meals to about 500 people living along the Hennops River in Centurion.
Another organisation, Friends of the Needy, helped residents in Eersterust with 200 dry food hampers.
The Dare to Love movement also handed out food parcels to about 10 00 people on Moloto Road in the North of Pretoria.
Last month, about 8 000 food parcels were distributed in Mooiplaas near Centurion.
