Taxi fare increase expected in city
This comes as all nine provinces, including Gauteng, are expected to increase taxi fares on 1 July.

The taxi industry in Tshwane said that there might be a possible fare hike in Pretoria next month.
However, the increase will not occur without consultation, said South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) Tshwane regional spokesperson Mack Makata.
“We can never increase fares without engaging our community representatives in our places of operation,” he said.
This comes as all nine provinces, including Gauteng, are expected to increase taxi fares on 1 July.
He said ordinarily Santaco increased fares during June/July annually.
He said it was just “unfortunate” that many were suffering at the hands of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Taxi fares are expected to increase, according to a source, by not more than R5 for local taxis, R7 for inter-city and long distance by R50.
Santaco said Gauteng commuters could expect reasonable fare increases.
“There are no 100% increases.”
This as the industry took a knock during lockdown as the taxi capacity was limited to 70 percent and curfew was also set to limit the movement of taxis.

The measures placed to create social distancing and to curb the spread of Covid-19 continued to put strain on the country’s taxi industry for months.
The restricted commuter load has forced taxis to share routes, leading to significantly less profits from daily commuters according to drivers.
