‘Angels’ come to the rescue of west families

A total of 10 families were identified and were supplied with essentials at the weekend.

Less-fortunate families in the Hercules area, west of Pretoria, came together at Grizzlies sports bar where Angel in Need donated food parcels and clothing.

A total of 10 families were identified and were supplied with essentials at the weekend.

Johan Cloete chairperson of Angels in Need said they were honoured to host the United Way South Africa.

“They have played a major role in this donation, not only identifying 10 families but also by donating blankets,” Cloete said.

Cloete said Reverend Rudi Botha of the Dutch Reformed Church in Wes Moot, also attended and never hesitated to offer help.

“We also like to thank the residents of San Serento for this huge effort to bring relief to the needy during these difficult times we are experiencing in our area,” said Cloete.

Ward councillor Elma Nel, who is known by many families in her community as “the Iron Woman”, also contributed help on this special day.

“Just like other fellow South African citizens I have lost income but this did not stop me from doing good to others in my community. I help out where I can and as such, families in the community also help other less fortunate families,” said Nel.

Nel said DA councillors also decided to continue working to help less fortunate families in their areas without asking for any compensation.

Previously, Rekord reported how Angels in Need had donated to families in the west with the help of other organisations such as Malusi Youth Development Project (MYDO) and Projek ek wil help.

Founder and executive director of Mydo Hlakudi Malatji told Rekord they were distributing food parcels and other essentials to more than 50 families within the Gomorrah area.

“Even after the lockdown, we will continue on mobilising food donations to as many as possible of Gomorrah families until they get back on their feet,” Malatji said.

Tanita Venter and seven other members from the Projek ek wil help, said they cooked for less-fortunate families.

“I started planning on how to get donations for the project and decided if all fails, I will then start to cook in bulk. Currently, the team and I have been cooking for about 234 people a day, for the past week,” Venter said.

Venter said without sponsors they would only be able to supply those households with food parcels once a week, because of the shortage of meat, rice, wheat, vegetables and cleaning products.
