Bishop to appear in court for sexual assault
A bishop from Westenburg was arrested on Thursday after five women opened separate cases of sexual assault against him
POLOKWANE – Westenburg police spokesperson, Capt Mohlaka Mashiane, said four cases were initially opened, with the fifth one opened recently.
“We have opened cases of sexual assault and acts of indecency. The bishop appeared before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Friday and the case was postponed to Tuesday for a formal bail application. He remains in police custody,” Mashiane said.
One of the alleged victims spoke to Review on condition of anonymity.
“The bishop normally preys on girls in the dance team and those who work in the office during the gap-year programme at the church. He wins over their trust and then takes advantage of them. Because so many people trust him and he is so well-known in the community and congregation, you are afraid of telling anyone about what he is doing,” the woman said.
The bishop’s son refused to give comment and referred Review to their attorney for any comment.
