Vhembe karate star (20) needs help for national championship
A 20-year-old karate student from Vhembe needs R5 000 to compete at the Masa MMA National Championship in Pretoria.
LIMPOPO –A young karate student from Itsani village is appealing to the Vhembe community for help to raise funds for the Masa MMA National Championship and Festival in Pretoria.
Ndomulivhuwa Zwothe Marandela, 20, needs R5 000 to cover the costs of competing at the national event, which takes place at the Joni Bach Sport Centre from June 26 to 28.
Orange belt trained under late sensei
Marandela is an orange belt karate student at the Takalani Karate Centre. He was introduced to karate at the age of 15 by the late sensei Takalani Target Mushavhanamadi, the founder of the centre in Thohoyandou.
Inspired by his mentor, Marandela’s passion for karate has taken him on a journey of self-discovery, personal growth and achievement.
After completing matric in 2024, he found it challenging to adjust during his gap year and decided to dedicate himself to karate full-time in 2025.
“I wanted to keep myself off the streets and focus on something positive,” he said.
Nearly 20 medals to his name
Marandela has participated in various tournaments and has won nearly 20 medals.
He recently competed at the Limpopo Karate Championship on May 2, where he won three silver medals, earning him qualification for the national tournament.
“To me, it is a great achievement and I trained very hard to earn this opportunity. I am the only student from the Vhembe region who has qualified for the national tournament,” he said.
The R5 000 required will cover accommodation, transport, clothing and entry fees.
Appeal to community and businesses
“It really breaks my heart to see young people caught up in drugs and alcohol, which are damaging our future,” he said.
“I kindly request donations or sponsorships that will enable me to compete at the nationals. I am appealing to the community and local businesses to assist me with funding so that I can take part in the tournament.”
To assist, contact sensei Azwihangwisi Yeye Nematshetshete at 071 626 0274.
