Limpopo sport hero’s and heroines honoured for their outstanding performances

The Limpopo Sport Awards 2019 was held at Meropa Casino and Entertainment World on Saturday night.

POLOKWANE – MEC for Sports, Thandi Moraka, said these awards represent the province’s high regard for the sports community of the province. ” These awards are aligned with the National Sports Awards in South Africa. The department aims to incentivise and applaud individual athletes, teams and administrators who continue to make our nation proud by displaying exceptional performances and attaining remarkable results,” said Moraka.

Thandi Moraka (MEC for Sports) says the awards represent the province’s high regard for the entire sports community of the province.

She believes some of the challenges that the government, sports administrators, volunteers, practitioners and sponsors face is infrastructure and how to encourage young people to get involved in sports. “We have plans in place to build our first ever High Performance Centre (HPC) in the province. The centre will be used as a training ground for tomorrow’s sporting champions and the venue of choice for sports professionals and enthusiasts alike. The HPC will distinguish itself by offering quality education to athletes in the province, the country and international high performance athletes, and does so within a flexible structure,” she said.

She told CV that the structure will create optimal training opportunities without compromise to the academic development of the athletes. “The HPC will be a valuable asset, not only to us as the department, but also to all the up-and-coming athletes in the province and country who will make use of our sport science support. I believe that our sportsmen and women must see themselves as we see them, as a crucial component part of our narrative of national progress. Their commitment to excellence in their respective codes and the maintenance of high standards must serve as a reminder to everyone in Limpopo and South Africa to work hard, to persevere and to strive for excellence in all spheres of life,” she explains.

She said that she believes that sportsmen and women should and can play a vital role to achieve the ideal of making sport accessible to all. “We are honoured as a province to have players represent us in international tournaments such as the Netball World Cup and FIFA Women’s World Cup,” she concluded.
