Univen gets help worth R64 mil
BANKSETA andSaica donated R64 million to assist the University of Venda to accelerate the training

BANKSETA and the South African Institute for Chartered Accountants (Saica) donated R64 million to assist the University of Venda to accelerate the training of accountants and financial managers.
The allocation in the University of Venda (Univen) means that students will no longer have to spend an extra year to be accredited as chartered accountants like before.
Students’ organisations and other professional bodies complained in the past that the institution was cheating them or offered them accounting degrees that were not recognised by SAICA. News reports over the past few years repeatedly voiced concerns about accounting students’ fears.
The BANKSETA programme will be run with the University of Johannesburg as alliance partner. Univen’s vice chancellor and principal, Prof Peter Mbati said the institution was ready to roll out the programme from next year.
“There is immense commitment from university management and quality guides what we do at Univen. The university is committed to start with the first intake in 2014 academic year,” he said
Reflecting on their readiness, Mbati said eight out 10 lecturers at the faculty were qualified chartered accountants and vowed to channel resources into developing skills.
University of Johannesburg’s head of accounting, Prof Alex van der Watt highlighted the university’s commitment to provide assistance and to ensure that the project was successfully implemented.
