Suspected cop assailants out on bail

THE three young men who allegedly assaulted a police official early Sunday morning were released on bail of R500 each by the Mankweng magistrate's court

THE three young men who allegedly assaulted a police official early Sunday morning were released on bail of R500 each by the Mankweng magistrate’s court on Monday, amid a general outcry by police officials, the DA and Cope, that the bail amount was too low.

The three men, Hardus van Jaarsveld (20) and brothers Donald and Edwin Albrecht (27 and 24 years old respectively), were seemingly under the influence of alcohol when they allegedly assaulted Const Tiseleni Shikwambana after chasing after his vehicle from Polokwane to Mankweng where they allegedly smashed his vehicle and assaulted him. Shikwambana, who is stationed at Groblersbrug, was in uniform at the time of the alleged assault and his wife was also with him.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi said Shikwambana and his wife were receiving counselling after their reported ordeal.

“Mrs Shikwambana is especially traumatised after the incident,” he said.

The men face charges of attempted hijacking, damage to property and common assault and will appear before court again on October 23.
