With a number of robberies being reported by spaza shop owners, especially in the Greenside area, the Westenburg police have urged all spaza shop owners to adhere to their closing times.
Westenburg police spokesperson, Capt Mohlaka Mashiane advised business owners to report any suspicious activities and to always ensure more than one person was present at closing time as a precaution.
He said the Westenburg police arrested 18 people over the past weekend during Operation Kitima Tsotsi (run criminal). These included two arrests involving driving under the influence of alcohol, two for the possession of marijuana, and 14 for public drinking. Five illegal shebeens were closed, with liquor being confiscated and the owners being issued with fines.
Mashiane assured law-abiding citizens and criminals alike that the police had zero tolerance when it came to crime. “We will not rest until the community is safe and free from crime,” Mashiane said.
