No beds for patients in Modimolle area

PATIENTS at the FH Odendaal Hospital in Modimolle are sleeping on the floor

PATIENTS at the FH Odendaal Hospital in Modimolle are sleeping on the floor because of an acute shortage of beds at the facility.

Residents depending on the hospitals’ services were shocked and outraged by the situation and DA Limpopo leader, Jacques Smalle, added the DA’s voice to theirs.

Smalle laid the blame for the situation squarely at the ANC government’s door, adding that medical equipment shortages were rife all over the province. The situation at FH Odendaal Hospital bordered on utter callousness, he said.

“According to our sources, nurses are sometimes forced to bring their own food in order to feed patients because there is also a shortage of food supply in this hospital. It’s unthinkable that with a province-wide shortage of medical equipment in Limpopo, the provincial government is destroying perfectly usable essentials like beds and wheelchairs,” he said.

Department spokesperson Adéle van der Linde acknowledged there was a shortage of beds at the hospital. “The department of health is working on the problem,” she said.

Smalle demanded an urgent meeting with health and social development MEC Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba last week, which was granted. Letsatsi-Duba gave her assurance that everything in her power would be done to rectify such matters. She also gave Smalle her private contact number in the interest of better communication between the two parties.
