Wildlife Mahala Week a big hit with learners
LIMPOPO citizens were encouraged to know their local tourism destinations and support them at all times

LIMPOPO citizens were encouraged to know their local tourism destinations and support them at all times at the launch of the Wildlife Mahala Week at the Polokwane Game Reserve last Tuesday night.
The launch was spearheaded by the Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA) with the aim of encouraging people to visit their local nature reserves and other places were quality time with their families could be spent. The launch formed part of Tourism Month’s activities.
LTA executive director of commercial operations Fixon Hlungwani said it was time that children knew about wildlife firsthand. He encouraged parents to make sure they taught their children about nature conservation and environmental issues.
The Wildlife Mahala Week saw the LTA hosting tourism learners from Kgagatlou, Mountain View, Doasho, and Mahoai high schools in the Capricorn district and in so doing the learners were able to learn more about the tourism attractions Polokwane and its surroundings offer.
These included a game drive at the Polokwane Game Reserve and a visit to the Bakoni Malapa outdoor museum. “We did this as part of the children’s curriculum and we are satisfied that we have played a role in helping these learners to get the exposure they need,” he said. One learner, Mahlatse Chifaro, won an all-expenses paid trip with his parents to visit the Limpopo nature reserve of their choice.
During Wildlife Mahala Week, visitors to the province’s nature reserves were granted entry free of charge. The week was proclaimed an enormous success by everyone involved, with learners expressing the hope that there would be more weeks like this in future.
