DOCTORS and staff at the Mankweng Hospital are still overwhelmed by the birth of a special baby boy on Thursday morning.

Blessing Hlungwane was born weighing 6,68kg and measuring 47cm.

Blessing and his mother, Treasure Hlongwane (36) are both doing well.

The spokesperson for the department of health and social development, Adèle van der Linde, said the department and the hospital were proud of the history-making birth.

“What started as a normal Thursday morning at the hospital soon changed into a hype of excitement and jubilation following Blessing’s birth, who was delivered through a Caesarian section,” Van der Linde said.

Blessing and his mother will return home to Phalaborwa soon to be with his four siblings.

Dr Rienk Baarsma, who delivered Blessing said he had never seen such a big newborn in his 36 years as a doctor. Evelyn Kgatla, a midwife with 15 years experience said she was equally stunned by Blessing’s weight.
