Cosatu prepares for conference

THE Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) hosted their Limpopo shop steward council meeting at the Jack Botes hall last Wednesday.

Provincial shop stewards said they were keen to take part in all major campaigns in preparation of the Cosatu provincial conference next year.

The first campaign, which was supported by the affiliates, was hosted in April and the second campaign will be hosted on December 5.

COSATU provincial chairperson, Essob Mokgonyana, said members were encouraged to attend one local shop steward council (LSSC) meeting at least once a month. “A generous number managed to do that, but local charters are still struggling with non attendance of the affiliates,” he said.

Mokgonyana said the union identified areas like Northam, Vaalwater and Steiloop as venues for future meetings.

As for the 2014 elections, the congress was resolute that Cosatu and its affiliates would develop a clear programme in line with the mainstream programme of the federation and unions.

According to Cosatu, the first phase of the programme would be to encourage women in their workplaces and communities as well as domestic workers to register for the general elections next year.
