DESPITE Limpopo’s education infrastructure backlog, an alleged shortage of textbooks, a few scholar transport scandals and a reported shortage of teachers in critical subjects, the Limpopo class of 2013 excelled in their matriculation exams, obtaining a pass rate of 71,8%.
According to an official statement by Limpopo MEC for education, Dikeledi Magadzi, announcing the results, 83 560 full time candidates registered to sit for the national senior certificate examinations in Limpopo and 59 183 passed, which translated to a 71,8% pass rate. This is a 4,9% improvement on the 66,9% matric pass rate of 2012.
In 2012, Limpopo obtained a 66,9% matric pass rate.
Magadzi, said the fact that 59 183 learners passed their senior certificate examinations was an indication that the province was working hard to ensure the majority of learners passed. Limpopo learners achieved a total of 18 781 bachelor passes in 2013, compared to 15 324 in 2012.
Magadzi said this increase in the number of bachelor passes was an indication that the improvement in the province’s pass percentage was not only quantitative, but also qualitative in nature.
