Residents go days without water

Residents braced themselves for yet another day without water yesterday (Wednesday) with some areas in the central business district and surrounding areas not having had water supply since Monday morning.

POLOKWANE – Residents braced themselves for yet another day without water yesterday (Wednesday) with some areas in the central business district and surrounding areas not having had water supply since Monday morning.

A major water pipeline in Devenish Street burst on Monday and workers have been repairing the line ever since.

It was estimated that water would be restored by midday on Tuesday, However this was not to be.

Domestic worker, Johanna Molebo said the water shortage had wasted three of her five working days as she did mostly washing for various residents in the area. “I get my pay daily and if I do not work, I will not get paid. The municipality must understand that by not replacing the old pipes that burst they are taking food out of ourchildren’s mouths,” Molebo said.

The area between Devenish and Suid Streets and Hans van Rensburg and Bok Streets, as well as the highest point of Nirvana are most affected. Motorists are also cautioned to be alert on the corner of Devenish and Biccard Streets as there is still a lot of water on the road.

“The municipality is committed to ensure the matter is fixed as speedily as possible and apologises for the inconvenience. Those who are affected are advised to call (015) 290 2376/2000 for assistance,” municipal spokesperson, Matshidiso Mothapo said.
