Heavy traffic expected on the N1 in Limpopo this weekend

Road users are being urged to factor in delays at toll plazas and major corridors as holiday and month-end travel gets under way.

POLOKWANE – Motorists travelling through Limpopo this weekend are being urged to plan ahead, with heavy traffic expected on the N1 as schools close and month-end travel gets under way.

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety says traffic volumes will increase significantly on the province’s major routes, particularly between Gauteng and Limpopo.

Holiday travel and month-end trips add to congestion

Congestion is expected on the N1 northbound on today (June 26) as families head to Limpopo for the school holidays.

On Sunday, heavy traffic is anticipated on the southbound route as travellers return to Gauteng.

Traffic officers out in full force across key routes

To help manage the increased traffic, the department has placed traffic law enforcement officers and emergency response teams on high alert.

Officers will be deployed around the clock along major routes, at weighbridges and toll plazas to improve visibility, respond to incidents and keep traffic moving where possible.

A reminder to drive carefully and be patient

Motorists are also urged to be patient, especially at toll gates where delays and long queues are expected.

The department warned that aggressive driving, cutting into queues and road rage can put lives at risk.

Before setting off, motorists are encouraged to:

  • Make sure their vehicle is roadworthy by checking tyres, brakes, lights and licence disc validity.
  • Obey the rules of the road by avoiding speeding, drinking and driving, overloading and cellphone use while driving.
  • Get enough rest before travelling and take regular breaks during long journeys.
  • Allow extra travel time to accommodate expected congestion.

The department reminded all road users that every driver has a role to play in keeping Limpopo’s roads safe this weekend.
