Van Schaik Bookstore in Schoeman Street donated 99 boxes of academic and school books to the department of correctional services on Wednesday.
POLOKWANE – Van Schaik Bookstore in Schoeman Street donated 99 boxes of academic and school books to the department of correctional services on Wednesday.
Rachel Madiba, the branch manager of Van Schaik Bookstore said the books they donated had an estimated value of R850 000.
“We are donating the books to assist those who want to study and equip themselves with knowledge.
“Being an offender does not mean you cannot study and try to make something of your life,” said Madiba.
The books will be distributed among five correctional services in Limpopo, namely Modimolle, Tzaneen, Polokwane, Thohoyandou and Makhado.
The correctional services area coordinator for development and care, Shebo Maserumule said: “This donation is part of our ministerial project inside correctional centres called Reading for Redemption, which aims to encourage offenders to read books and equip themselves with knowledge.
“We would like to thank Van Schaik Bookstore for coming on board and helping us with this project as rehabilitation is a social responsibility.
“These books will benefit about 4 000 offenders in Limpopo”.
Andrew Malang, who is an offender on parole said the books would help a lot of offenders.
“Reading will keep them busy while they simutaneously acquire knowledge,” he said.
