Mom under observation after baby is killed

THE Vuwani magistrate's court on Monday ordered the police to take a 30-year-old mother to the Tshilidzini Hospital for mental observation after she allegedly used an axe to kill one of her three-month-old twins in Ha-Mutsha village last Friday.

THE Vuwani magistrate’s court on Monday ordered the police to take a 30-year-old mother to the Tshilidzini Hospital for mental observation after she allegedly used an axe to kill one of her three-month-old twins in Ha-Mutsha village last Friday.

The horrific incident occurred on the premises of the Gondo La Vhutshilo Apostolic Church, where she and other people were being prayed for.

Archbishop Enos Kopani said he saw her feeding her twins. A few minutes later, she asked if she could fetch some water. Other congregants reportedly offered to fetch the water for her, but she declined.

“She forced her way through the congregants with her twins, took an axe and started hacking at one of them. The people nearby grabbed her, and took the axe away. They rushed the baby to the Tshilidzini Hospital, but she died on arrival. The church is shocked by this horrific event,” Kopani said.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, said the young mother appeared before the Vuwani magistrate’s court on Monday, when the magistrate ordered that she should go for mental observation. The woman was due to appear before court again on June 30.

In a separate incident that occurred in Letsitele last week, Christina Makhanani Baloyi (20) was arrested after her 20-month-old baby, Xitsunduxo Baloyi, died. The baby was strangled and thrown into a pit toilet.

Baloyi is in custody until her next court appearance on June 2.
