Recovery centre is a beacon of hope

There is no quick-fix for people who are addicted to drugs, but a recovery centre in the city offers addicts a positive solution to their problems.

POLOKWANE – There is no quick-fix for people who are addicted to drugs, but a recovery centre in the city offers addicts a positive solution to their problems.

Scott Davison and Michele Dix-Peek founded the Meteffect Recovery Centre in 2012 with the specific aim to help people on their road to recovery through a healthy, holistic, long-term programme.

The centre is situated on the Mogwadi (Dendron – R521) road, just outside of Polokwane, with the capacity to cater for 15 primary care patients and eight people in their halfway house.

“People need to be made aware of the different types of addiction, as well as the effect that addiction has on the community,” says Davison.

He says addiction is a disease and Meteffect developed a programme that deals with each challenge that recovering addicts face; providing them with life-long solutions.

According to Davison, the three-month programme at Meteffect incorporates recovery, discovery, renewal and reintegration. It uses the wisdom of the 12-step recovery, as well as the strength of recovery coaching, life skills and adventure to provide a springboard to a new life.

Meteffect Recovery Centre offers various options to people who need help on their road to recovery, including primary care and a halfway house.

“Primary care is an in-house treatment where the clients live in a therapeutic community. Clients at Meteffect participate in group therapy sessions, as well as intensive one-on-one sessions. Each client is allocated two counsellors.

The halfway house, Kenako, which means “it is time”, is currently situated on the same property. At Kenako, participants can reintegrate into society in a safe environment, says Dix-Peek.

She explains that people who live in the halfway house have the freedom to leave and go to work, but still take part in the 12-step programme and have access to counselling.

Clients in the centre volunteer for holistic withdrawal which consists of Acudetox, lymph drainage massage and reflexology. The withdrawal phase is monitored very carefully and, if necessary, clients receive medical attention by outsourced professionals. However, Dix-Peek states that there has not been a need for that to date.

Meteffect Recovery Centre places special emphasis on family. They believe in strengthening the family unit and spending a lot of time dealing with the families of addicts who have not known how to seek help.

The centre also offers an outpatient programme.

The outpatient programme is a six-week programme that caters for adolescents, people who are unable to attend an inpatient primary treatment programme, people who can only attend in the evenings due to work commitments and clients who have left primary treatment programmes in other parts of South Africa, who are in need of structured aftercare interventions.

Meteffect is the shortened name for Metamorphosis Effect. A name carefully chosen for what it symbolises. Meteffect Recovery Centre is a serene cocooned environment where recovering addicts are safe changed.

Meteffect Recovery Centre provides the addict the opportunity to grow into their own greatness, to stretch their wings and fly.
