Fire forces MEC to flee building with others

Work came to a standstill at the department of sport, arts and culture's offices in the city on Friday morning when all personnel in the building was asked to vacate the building as fast as possible due to a fire in the building.

POLOKWANE – Work came to a standstill at the department of sport, arts and culture’s offices in the city on Friday morning when all personnel in the building was asked to vacate the building as fast as possible due to a fire in the building.

The incident happened while the MEC, Nandi Ndalane, addressed the media and she had to be rushed out of the building with the journalists.

The Polokwane fire department arrived on the scene shortly after everybody was evacuated from the building and entered the building to assess the fire and to put it out.

Phuti Matheta, municipal leading firefighter, said a spiral heater caused the fire.

“We found a heater in one of the offices and it was plugged in too close to some papers in the office.

We want to advise all workers: if you are going to use a heater in the office, rather use a fan heater,” said Matheta.

“If there is a fire alarm, please make sure that you evacuate the building as fast as you can for your own safety.”

Review tried to contact the department for comment, but by the time of going to print, no comment was available.
