THE 29-year-old rapist who nearly lost his penis, and his 26-year-old accomplice, were sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment each by the Giyani regional court on Thursday for raping two women on November 17 last year.
Victor Obert Maluleke realised that he had bitten off more than he could chew when he and Surprise Mabasa accosted two women who were hiking home near Giyani, and forced them into the bushes to rape them. One of the woman convinced Maluleke that she wanted to perform fellatio on him, but instead, she bit his penis as hard as she could, biting off the skin in the process. While Maluleke was still in shock, she ran off to call for help.
Maluleke and Mabasa were later arrested, and Maluleke spent several months in Khensani Hospital.
According to one of the nurses who treated Maluleke, and wished to remain anonymous, Maluleke was very lucky not to have lost his penis.
Giyani police spokesperson WO Thomas Makhubele commended the courage and quick thinking of the victim who bit Maluleke, saying it was through her that the rapists had been caught.
“If it weren’t for her the suspects would probably have gotten away with it,” he said, adding that the sentence was a victory to the investigating officers who ensured that the suspects did not walk out free of charge due to insufficient evidence.
