Official in court over copper theft

A POLICE constable and four other people appeared briefly before the Phalaborwa magistrate’s court on charges of theft and possession of suspected stolen property last week.

Const Clarence Nkuna (33), Benjamin Peter Ndlovu (32), Davy Ndzeni (21), Phatudi Malatji (32) and Calvin Ngobeni (21) were granted R2 000 bail each. Their case was remanded to August 13 pending further police investigations.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi said the suspects were arrested on Friday while allegedly attempting to smuggle copper valued at over R80 000 from the premises of a mine at Phalaborwa.

“The suspects were arrested just after they left the premises of the Foskor Mine just outside the town,” Mulaudzi said. He said the police constable was driving a marked police vehicle in which there were four occupants when they were stopped at a search point. The men were arrested when the police allegedly found suspected stolen cable in the vehicle.

Mulaudzi said internal processes to charge Nkuna were at an advanced stage.
