POLOKWANE – Mystery surrounds the stabbing death of Daniel Matsepane (61), who was killed on Thursday afternoon.
According to his son, Dalton Matsepane, Daniel, who was a salesperson at Auto Moti, left his office in Landdros Maré Street as usual on Thursday, but never arrived home.
Dalton told Review that the family was concerned when he did not come home from work at the usual time, and started to suspect that something was wrong.
Daniel was found dead near the Westenburg bridge in extension 40 later that afternoon.
“We received a phone call from the police who told us that they had found my father’s body near the bridge. He had been stabbed twice in the back and he died near the road, just a few kilometres from our home,” he said.
The reason for the murder is not known. Dalton told Review that his father always carried a firearm for protection. Daniel’s firearm was found on him. This led the family to believe the motive for the killing was murder and not robbery.
The family has promised to pay an undisclosed amount of money for any information leading to the arrest in this case.
Daniel’s colleagues at Auto Moti, where he worked for the past 18 years, said he was the kind of person who would go out of his way to help others, and he was dedicated to his work.
Westenburg police spokesperson, Capt Mohlaka Mashiane, confirmed that the body of a man was found next to the Westenburg road near the bridge on Thursday.
According to the police report, the body was found with two stab wounds in the back by a passerby. A firearm was also found under the dead man, and a case of murder was being investigated.
“It seems that the man (Daniel) tried to defend himself after being stabbed and fired some shots into the air before collapsing and dying,” Mashiane said.
