A SUSPECTED thief escaped after a high-speed chase that ended in a fiery explosion, with police officials staying hot on his heels until he was apprehended last Tuesday.

According to Bolobedu police spokesperson, Const Rebotile Shai, two police officials were on a routine patrol last Saturday when they spotted a bakkie with a roll of fencing on the back. They suspected that the fencing could be stolen and approached the bakkie.

The driver of the bakkie drove away and the police officials gave chase.

“After a high-speed chase, the suspect suddenly abandoned his bakkie and ran away. The bakkie started burning and exploded,” Shai said.

The reason for the fire was not known by the time of going to print and police investigations continued.

Shai said police officials followed up on some leads and arrested Matome Senyolo (35) from Matipane village in Bolobedu.

Senyolo appeared before the Bolobedu magistrate’s court on Friday on charges of theft. The case was postponed to August 18 for further investigation.

The court granted Senyolo R2 000 bail.
